Château de Montal

Come and visit Montal Chateau, a masterpiece of the French Renaissance with unique sculpted decorations, lying 26km from Rocamadour. Built between 1519 and 1534 by a remarkable woman, Jeanne de Balsac, the building was magnificently restored and furnished in the early 20th century.

Understanding Montal Chateau

• The diffusion of the Italian model. Montal, together with neighbouring Assier Chateau and Puyguilhem Chateau in the Périgord are characteristic of the new art of living discovered in the early 16th century by the French nobility.

• Rescued by Maurice Fenaille. He was an eminent collector and acquired the chateau in 1908, refurnished it, and bought back the pieces which had been sold off between 1881 and 1903. What could not be bought back he had copied by one of Rodin’s disciples, before giving the building to the State in 1913.
